Sun, 01 Apr 2012 18:34:00 -0700 Picked up a Bokashi Bin at the Austin Garden Festival today. http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/picked-up-a-bokashi-bin-at-the-austin-garden http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/picked-up-a-bokashi-bin-at-the-austin-garden

I have been gathering kitchen food scrapes, coffee grinds, egg shells, etc from our kitchen and I collect them in a indoor compost container for about 2 years now. I have gone through several systems, simple rubbermaid containers, special plastic compost bins, stainless steel container with carbon oder filters, but all of them essentially have the same problems, they require frequent emptying outdoors, otherwise they start to stink and have a tendancy to attract fruit flies and other insects. This past spring has been especially bad with the fruit flies.

I have a 3 foot x 3 foot x 3 foot outdoor compost pile that I made it out of old wooden pallets 5 years ago. I have been using it to dispose of all my kitchen scraps, leaves, I use a pitchfork and have been turning the pile with good results, but with all the labor and sifting to get good compost, I typically only gather the compost once a year in the spring and use it for new planting or to top dress my beds. I thought there has to be an easier way and a better way to get more frequent microbial activity and nutrients into the soil.

I have considered worm composting, but the thought of having worms inside my house is slighly creepy to me, but extremely creepy to my wife.

After seeing the BOKASHI BIN INDOOR composting system at the Autin Garden Festival today, I thought I would give it a try. The concept is very similar to home brewing beer. The system consists of a plastic bokashi bin and bokashi bran with microbes. The bin  has a spigot and a internal strainer to seperate the liquid ( fermented ) from the the solids and should be drained every 2-3 days. They also offer a 2nd 5 gallon pail bin with a twist on lid which can be used to transfer a full load of compost from the bokashi bin for the 10-14 final fermination process. Striking similar to a secondary fermintation vessel for brewing beer.

The biggest benifit, I think is going to be the frequent application of a compost tea to my plants

With the City of Austin moving towards a zero waste goal and typical trash waste stream beeing 30% food scraps, the city has every incentive to get residents to keep as much organic scraps out of the waste stream as possible. The city of Austin has a Green30 Challenge rebate which pays for 75% of the cost of a compost system, up to $75 dollars if you downsize your trash can to 30 gallon size.

20 years ago I started home brewing beer, today I started brewing compost tea!

Cougar Matt out.

Hello All!  I wanted to let you know that effective today all of the City of Round Rock’s water restrictions have been lifted.  The heavy rains last week, coupled with the large rains this whole past winter, have now filled Lake Georgetown to 100% full—which is great news.  We are asking our customers to follow the voluntary twice per week water schedule.  All variances (large property & new landscape) are now null and void as they are no longer needed.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you all for your cooperating and assistance in working with me and other RR staff during the restrictions over the past 7 months, I sincerely appreciate it!

Still less than half full. No need to irrigate this week in Austin. Keep conserving Austin.

Wed, 25 Jan 2012 11:32:00 -0800 5 inches of rain in parts of Austin last night, only 19 inches of rain for Austin in all 2011 http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/5-inches-of-rain-in-parts-of-austin-last-nigh http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/5-inches-of-rain-in-parts-of-austin-last-nigh

3.5 to 5.25 inches in some parts of austin, what does it mean for the drought and the lake levels Unfortunately most of the rain fell over the Austin and the lower basin, meaning the Highland lakes system of dams really did not get that much acccumulated runoff to fill the lakes that supply the Austin and Central Texas water supply. Don't expesct much impact on water restrictions for our area.

The good news, soil in Central Austin are at moisture capacy. One of our Cougar installed local soil moisure sensors read 43.6% soil moisture in Rosedale this morning. This same sensor was in the single digits and teens all last summer even with a watering schedule of 2 times a week. Since Nov/Dec rains have hit, this sensor has never been lower  than 20% soil moisture. So what does all this mean.... well it is a wetter and therefore better winter than last year, which means trees and plants and grasses should have a chance to recover and actually come out stronger this Spring than they did last winter, which was drier and colder..

I was pleasantly surprised while running the Shoal Creek and Town Lake trails this morning. The creek was full and there was very little tree damage. Very good sign that trees are pliable and not brittle like they were last summer.

Downside of all this rain and mild weather, weeds and mosquitos will probably be back with a vengence.

Thanks,

Cougar Matt

Thu, 19 Jan 2012 08:08:00 -0800 WATER CONSERVATION CODE REVISION PROCESS - Workshop Tonight! http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/water-conservation-code-revision-process-work http://cougarmattstamm.posterous.com/water-conservation-code-revision-process-work

On Thursday January 19, residents and businesses are invited to attend a workshop to discuss how the City should regulate water use in times of drought and review specific restrictions like the watering schedule and limits on car washing. The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in Room 104 of Austin Water’s Waller Creek Center located at 625 E.10th Street.

The regional drought has created unprecedented challenges for Austin Water and the residents of Austin. After discussions with the City Manager and City Council, Austin Water is beginning the process of revising the current Water Conservation Code to better align with long-term drought conditions.

At stake is striking a balance between conserving our available water supply for the safety of our citizens and sustaining our local economy and the natural surroundings so unique to Austin.

On Tuesday, December 13, representatives from a broad list of stakeholders met to discuss the current situation and worked on devising a public process to revise the current codes.  As meetings are scheduled, they will be announced at the following web site as well as a variety of other mediums.

Recent rains have been a nice change for Central Texas but have done little, if anything, to break the drought. Inflows to the Highland Lakes are still next to nothing and the forecast is for a drier than normal winter. The children's song needs to be "Rain, rain, stay till May".
